California youth changing the face of homelessness in her community

Ashley Le, a Senior at Santiago High School in Garden Grove, California, describes herself as coming from, “a little bit of a disadvantage financially.” But she says this has never stopped her from feeling as if she has the power to bring about positive change in her community.

Together with her fellow WE Club members, she is volunteering to help the homeless while ensuring they’re given the respect they deserve.

The experience has also provided Ashley with a new level of confidence. “I think service learning is probably the key to leadership,” says her school’s WE Club Coordinator, Cheryl Garcia. “I don’t think you can lead people unless you are willing to serve people.”
